Why Look for a Chrome Remote Desktop Alternative?

Although Chrome Remote Desktop is a convenient free tool for basic tasks, its browser-dependent constraints and lack of advanced features lead many users to seek more powerful, flexible alternatives.

Absence of a Free Personal Tier icon

Strict Browser & Account Dependencies

Requires a Google account and relies heavily on Chrome, which can be inconvenient for users of other browsers or strict corporate environments.

Prohibitively High Pricing icon

Inability to Handle Simultaneous Connections

Supports only one active controller, with no multi-user viewing or session sharing for team collaboration.

Complex Billing & Support Bottlenecks icon

Absence of Advanced IT Support Tools

Designed for basic remote access, it lacks professional features like text chat, remote reboot, and session recording.

Aggressive Renewal Practices icon

Basic File Transfer Limitations

Uses browser-based upload and download instead of a dedicated file manager, making large or batch transfers less efficient.

Feature Bloat & Interface Complexity icon

Limited Enterprise Security Controls

Lacks advanced options such as role-based access, custom permissions, and detailed audit logs.

Heavy Resource Usage & Latency icon

Zero Performance & Bandwidth Customization

Offers few options to adjust image quality, frame rate, or bandwidth, which can lead to lag on slower networks.

I like that I can have a free account with my own devices and still support someone remotely that isn't part of my account.
The app is really easy to learn and setup, there aren't any annoying adds or forced license fees.
It really is "free" to use with added functions on purchased feature upgrades.
What is a bit annoying is that my application doesn't keep remembering my login details and i have to log in again after a while.

I've had a great experience with AnyViewer. It's incredibly easy to use, yet still powerful enough to handle everything I need for remote support.
Setup was simple, performance has been reliable, and it makes helping clients fast and stress-free. What really stands out is their support team — even though everything is handled via email, they've been responsive, helpful, and genuinely supportive whenever I've needed assistance.
Highly recommend for anyone looking for a practical, dependable remote access solution.

AnyViewer works perfectly. The UI is clean and transparent. The functions are all there. The pricing of the full version is fair, and there are some special prices coming and going every now and then. The demo version, which I used for a long time, is far more usable than that of the TeamViewer and many others, which I appreciate a lot. I do not see anything better thus far on the market, free or otherwise. Keep up the good work!

I have used another Remote Control program before but me and my family that I support much prefer AnyViewer. The program launches quickly the the view of the remote computer's screen refreshes smoothly. When I'm away from home I enjoy being able to use the portable version of the application on someone else PC.

TeamViewer is a powerful and user-friendly remote access tool that makes it incredibly easy to connect to another computer or device from anywhere. Whether you're helping a friend fix a problem, accessing your work PC from home, or managing multiple devices, TeamViewer delivers smooth performance with very little setup.

"To help someone using TeamViewer, the best option is to have them use the TeamViewer QuickSupport application. This is designed specifically for spontaneous, one-time assistance where they do not need to install software, but can simply run an executable file to give you access."
Simplicity is the key to success.

I liked being able to share my mobile device's screen. Despite having a bit of trouble during setup, I managed to configure it. The downside I found is that the shared screen is just a smidgeon larger than that of my 8" scan tool tablet. I was expecting something a bit closer to my laptop's 15" screen -- at least 11" or so.

I've been using AnyDesk for a few years to stay connected to my devices when traveling for work. It's easy to use, responsive and stable. Awful. This is what will happen:
You will subscribe, they will auto-renew and arbitrarily raise prices SUBSTANTIALLY. If you unlink paypal, they will send a German debt collector to you. You will not be able to contact Anydesk because they won't answer and their contact form leaves you NO PROOF of contact (ticket or email receipt).
It's basically a well thought out extortion scheme.

Terrible.
As a small company we used to buy Anydesk on a regular basis for 2 years. Our Team of 4 engineers used to parallely work on multiple systems.
Recenly we renewed the same licence, but suddenly our engineers couldnt work on it parallely.. They said parallel connection requries addn purchase and it was due to some issue with their servers we were able to use it. Okay, we understand but shouldnt you reach out to us regrading the same? Instead of trying to sell your licences. Never going back

They make it very hard to cancel your subscription. You have to cancel three months prior to the next billing period,. There is no need to have such long period. It is only used to get an extra year of subscription out of your pocket.
Keep away from these kind of businesses.

I was a long time user of LogMeInRescue. But when the company ownership changed, the product started to fail and their tech support wasn't as helpful as they once were. I decided to look around and other techs recommended Splashtop. Not only is it faster to connect, it also allows me to remote into phones so I can remote help with my clients email/data synching with their Outlook. And the price is way better too. Highly recommend.

I moved to Splashtop from LogMeIn, 'years ago', after LogMeIn decided to hike up their prices to ridiculous levels. Only Splashtop offered similar features and have looked after me ever since, for a very fair price.
The product just keeps getting better and I use it to support customers, family and friends.
I would recommend it to anyone.

I had situations where I could not upkeep an internet connection. Anydesk would keep failing and drop connection causing me to reconnect every time. Zoho helped with the situation right there after and I could keep up the connection and change the Firewall settings and allow internet to an offsite office. keeping connection on LTE WIFI and configuring LAN. it helped a ton, and I was needed to fly to the client. all of this and at the same price I paid for other software with less capability.

This company, increase prices right after contract. They do not reply to support tickets. Months of problems without solutions. Closing tickets without solving or even answering. Worst support I ever encountered. If you think to be their partner - think again, after 1 year they will go after your customers directly, offering lowered contracts for them then for partner - and after a year they increase price to normal for that customer. Choose something better then this for your clients! Worst experience ever.

FAQs About Chrome Remote Desktop Alternatives

Why should you switch from Chrome Remote Desktop to an alternative?

While Chrome Remote Desktop is free and simple, alternatives offer advanced features like flexible multi-monitor navigation, robust file transfer speeds, granular permission controls, detailed audit logs, and dedicated performance optimization.

Are there completely free alternatives available?

Yes. Tools like RustDesk offer free open-source access, and platforms like AnyViewer provide functional free tiers. However, advanced commercial features or heavy multi-user environments typically require a paid subscription.

How do paid alternatives justify their subscription costs?

Paid solutions deliver dedicated infrastructure, ultra-low latency codecs, professional customer support, compliance certifications (such as HIPAA and SOC 2), and advanced security features that free web tools lack.

Can you use these alternatives for unattended access?

Most third-party tools, including AnyViewer, AnyDesk, TeamViewer, and RemotePC, support unattended access, allowing you to securely connect to a host computer without requiring someone physically present to accept the session.

Which alternative is best for self-hosting and data privacy?

RustDesk is the leading open-source choice that lets you host your own private relay server, ensuring complete data sovereignty, customized security rules, and full control over your connection logs.

Do these tools work across different operating systems?

Yes. Solutions like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, and RustDesk provide comprehensive cross-platform support across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android devices.

Which software offers the lowest latency for heavy tasks?

AnyDesk (using its proprietary DeskRT codec) and TeamViewer excel at delivering high frame rates, low latency, and smooth responsiveness even under demanding network conditions.

How do file transfer speeds compare among these tools?

Dedicated tools generally outperform basic browser solutions, with options like AnyViewer and AnyDesk offering high-speed direct or relay file transfers that easily handle large media and document archives.

Are these alternatives compliant with regulations like HIPAA or SOC 2?

Enterprise-focused tools such as TeamViewer, Zoho Assist, and AnyDesk offer built-in regulatory compliance, making them suitable for healthcare, finance, and enterprise IT compliance requirements.

Which tool is best suited for small business IT support?

Zoho Assist and TeamViewer are purpose-built for helpdesks, offering technician management, multi-session handling, instant chat, and remote diagnostic tools.

Do you need technical skills to set up these alternatives?

Most commercial solutions feature quick installers and intuitive user interfaces. However, self-hosted tools like RustDesk require basic technical familiarity to configure a private server infrastructure.

How do you choose the right alternative for your workflow?

Select AnyViewer for budget-friendly daily use, AnyDesk or TeamViewer for high-performance cross-platform speed, Zoho Assist for professional IT support, or RustDesk for absolute self-hosted control.
